Establishment Description

Cleopatra is a romantic gourmet getaway tucked deep into the KwaZulu Natal’s Drakensberg Mountains surrounded by the Giants Castle Nature Reserve.  Beautifully situated on the edge of a trout filled dam, alongside the Little Mooi River, the soaring mountains rise majestically from the bottom of the garden. Expecting something grand and imposing, it is a pleasure to be enthralled by a place of luxurious simplicity, of hospitable charm that perfectly fits the rustic context. It is understated and elegantly fits into its natural environment.

Accommodation

Individually decorated, the eleven rooms at Cleopatra are fast becoming world renowned for the innovative and creative décor. Each room has a theme and is filled with many articles pertaining to the colour scheme and theme. All rooms have a warm, snug bed with down duvets and pillows, fresh crisp, cotton sheets and mohair blankets. All have en suite bathrooms, TV, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bars, heaters, fans and warm towel rails. All have spectacular views. The comfort, peace and tranquility is untarnished by people and create memories that will take a lifetime to fade.

Area activities

A visit to the San rock art at nearby Kamberg and Giants Castle is a must. These famous sites have been carefully restored with tourism in mind. In summer the mountains burst into life with the magical flora that is endemic to the area.Hiking these spectacular mountains you can often see many buck species. There are many endemic bird species to be seen as well. Swimming in the mountain pools is a must, as the waters are clear and untouched by human habitation. Horse riding is also an unforgettable experience. Trout fishing is available in the river and in nearby dams. The ultimate experience is a helicopter to take you into the Drakensberg mountains.

Cuisine

A friendly dining room filled with interesting artifacts and a large crackling fireplace invites you to enjoy a world-class meal lovingly prepared by Richard Poynton (recently awarded a 5 star chef status) and his team.  Passion and patience goes into the preparation of every dish with flavour paramount.  Menus change daily and local, imported and homegrown ingredients are used at their peak and a stroll through the vegetable and herb gardens will attest to this. A place in the country becomes a natural magnet to people who want to savour the flavours of home grown vegetables, farm fresh dairy products and home cured hams. The passion and patience that goes into the preparation of food is reflected in the tastes and textures.

Food Philosophy

Renowned chef - Richard Poynton - creates menus with flair and above all – flavour. Although Richard loves dairy products he also loves his organic home-grown herbs, fruit and vegetables. He uses the local producers as well as other choice ingredients.

Chef's Profile

Cleopatra 30resizedThrough the trials, tribulations and vicissitudes of being a chef over many years, I believe that the one thing you need to make it work really well is passion. This love for food started at a very early age for me and has continued unabated to the present. I know some people just eat to live, but I think the philosophy followed by many of the Italians and French that I’ve met, living to eat, is the one I follow.
I don’t see what I do as a job, or going to work. It is a lifestyle, and certainly the way we do it here at Cleopatra is never boring. I am extremely lucky to have the freedom to cook what I want to cook, and this allows me to try out many styles, using the vast array of ingredients available to the chef today.
