Here in South Africa, Heritage Day is the countrywide celebration of its vast and varied cultural identities. Although many unique differences exist between the myriad cultures comprising the population of South Africa, there’s a common bond that unites them all…communal cooking around a fire. Whether it is called Shisa Nyama, Ukosa or the most utilized term braai, people across South Africa are always chomping at the bit to unite in celebration around feasts forged by fire. From small gatherings of friends on the weekends to weddings, food made over a fire to be shared with friends and family is a national pastime. So much so, that in recent years Heritage Day has taken on an additional moniker - National Braai Day.

In honor of this special annual event, the Food Routes crew has teamed up with a favorite countryside and culinary destination, Bartholomeus Klip and special guest Chef Reuben Riffel. Together we have created a fun-filled pop-up event with food, drink and entertainment ideas guaranteed to make sparks fly at your own celebrations spent around the fire with family and friends.

Taking place on September 13th at Bartholomeus Klip this already sold-out event will showcase the fiery culinary wizardry of Chefs Reuben Riffel and Bartholomeus Klip’s own queen of the grill Chef Louise Gillett. Local food and wine purveyors, Darling Brewery, Bosman Family Vineyards, Buffalo Ridge, Olyvenbosch Olive Farm and Kloovenburg will be onboard with delectable delights.
